Tulum

Tulum is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico and arguably the most photogenic. Its location on the shore of the Caribbean makes picture taking a delight. It's only a small site, and will only take about an hour to look round and photograph.

The best times to visit Tulum are first thing in the morning and late in the day. It's far better to visit and take pictures without the place being overrun with other tourists, who tend to get in the way of a good photograph.

Tulum is one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayan people. Its main occupation occurred during 15th and 16th centuries. The original name was Zama, which means dawn, because it is located on the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula, facing the sunrise.

Tulum is surrounded by a wall on three of its sides. This could reflect the complicated social and political conditions of the time. Experts assume that the Mayans used this site as both a religious centre and fortress look out. The temples and rooms of priests and important lords were located here.

Tulum, is a beautiful site but can be a little disappointing if you like to climb the ruins, like in Tikal, as due to the heavy volume of tourists, it's not permitted, plus the site has no tall pyramids.
